The verdict in the case of the blackmail of the two French journalists Eric Laurent and Catherine Graciet accused of having threatened to publish a book against King Mohammed VI and Morocco is expected on Tuesday.
The two defendants face a 5-year prison sentence and a fine of 75,000 euros, while the public prosecutor has requested suspended one-year prison sentences for each of the two journalists, together with a fine. of 15,000 euros.
Former journalist Eric Laurent, 75, admitted to the Paris Criminal Court a “moral error” by getting involved in this case but refuted “any criminal offense”.
Journalist Catherine Graciet, for her part, acknowledged that “the Moroccan state emissary seduced her with his financial offer”.
Two voice recordings are at the origin of the indictment of the two French journalists, in which they proposed to abandon a book supposed to contain embarrassing revelations for King Mohammed VI against 3 million euros.
The two journalists have been indicted since 2015 for blackmail and extortion, but their lawyers qualify the charges by acknowledging a “financial agreement” but refuting the accusation of blackmail.
