The Moroccan football team is nominated for the title of “revelation of the year” at the Laureus World Sports Awards, the list of the different categories of which was unveiled on Monday.
In this category, the Atlas Lions, who created the feat during the last World Cup in Qatar by finishing in 4th place, are candidates for this distinction alongside the Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, the Nigerian athlete Tobi Amusan, American figure skater Nathan Chen, Russian tennis player Elena Rybakina and American golfer Scottie Scheffler.
For the title of “Athlete of the Year”, six candidates were selected. They are American basketball player Stephen Curry, Swedish athlete Armand Duplantis, Frenchman Kylian Mbappé and Argentinian Lionel Messi. The list also includes Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal and Dutch F1 driver Max Verstappen, winner last year.
In the ladies, Jamaican athlete Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce will compete against American swimmer Katie Ledecky, American athlete Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Spanish soccer player Alexia Putellas, American skier Mikaela Shiffrin and Polish tennis player Iga Swiatek.
Prizes will also be awarded for, among others, Team of the Year, which features Argentina men’s football team, England women’s football team, France men’s rugby team, Golden State Warriors, Real Madrid and Red Bull Racing.
As for the “Return of the Year” category, it includes Italian motorcycle rider Francesco Bagnaia, Danish footballer Christian Eriksen, Norwegian athlete Jakob Ingebrigtsen, American basketball player Klay Thompson, Dutch cyclist Annemiek van Vleuten and American golfer Tiger Woods.
The nominees were determined by a panel of 1,400 members from media around the world. The 71 members of the Laureus World Sports Academy, namely former sports champions, will determine the winners of these awards which have existed since 2000.
The Laureus World Sports Awards are international sports awards given each year to athletes, all disciplines combined, who have had the greatest impact on the world of sport the previous year, but also to associations or individuals who promote sport for charitable purposes. . These distinctions are awarded at a ceremony organized by the Laureus Foundation.
