FIFA: Towards a stadium named after Pelé

FIFA-affiliated federations will be asked to name a stadium in the name of Brazilian legend Pelé, who died of cancer last Thursday. The announcement was made by the president of the international body, Gianni Infantino, during the funeral wake of the late star.

Speaking to the press after paying tribute to Pelé and praying in front of his coffin, Infantino underlined “the importance of the idol for sport”, adding that he will ask “all member countries of the Fifa to name at least one stadium in honor of the former player”.

“(We attend this funeral wake) with a lot of emotion, sadness, but also with a smile because it gave us a lot of joy. We will honor the ‘king’ and ask the whole world to observe a minute of silence,” he said.

In addition to Infantino, the president of the Brazilian federation, Ednaldo Rodrigues, and of the Conmebol (South American confederation), Alejandro Domínguez, were also present at the Santos stadium for a tribute to Pelé.

Note that several hundred people flocked to the Santos FC stadium on Monday for the funeral wake open to the public.
