EU explains EP resolution and impact on partnership with Morocco

The European Union has commented on the recent resolution of the European Parliament which interferes in the internal affairs of Morocco. According to the EU spokesperson, the European Parliament is independent and its resolutions reflect its positions.

“The European Parliament is an independent institution, its decisions are the result of deliberations between the different political groups that make it up and reflect the vote of their majority,” said Nabila Massrali, spokesperson for foreign affairs and security policy. from the EU in a statement to MoroccoLatestNews.

While the EP resolution was very poorly received in Morocco and provoked reactions from many institutions, including the Moroccan Parliament, which announced that it was reviewing its relations with the European institution, the EU spokesperson insisted on clarifying that the strategic partnership and the agreements signed with Morocco would not be threatened, at least not from the European side.

“The High Representative, Josep Borrell, clearly expressed his position on relations between the European Union and Morocco during his recent visit to Rabat”, affirmed the spokesperson, noting that this is “a solid and strategic partnership”.

She nevertheless added that Josep Borrell stressed during his meeting with the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, that this partnership “must be based on values, and therefore we attach great importance to the protection of human rights. human rights and fundamental freedoms, including freedom of the press and of expression,” she said, noting that the EU and Morocco have been working together for many years on these issues.

“The High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy was also concerned about the allegations of corruption by members of the European Parliament, which found an echo in the press,” Nabila Massrali added to MoroccoLatestNews.

And to consider that “these accusations are serious, and that the position of the European Union is very clear: there can be no impunity for corruption – zero tolerance”.

Morocco claims to be the victim of a campaign of political and media harassment and in these cases which all seem to have in common to happen at the level of the European Parliament. The European institution has been the scene for many months of new episodes targeting Morocco.
