Borrell hails Morocco's "important role" in peace and stability in the region

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, praised Thursday in Rabat, Morocco’s “important role” in terms of peace and stability in the region.

Speaking at a joint press briefing after his talks with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita, Borell said that these exchanges on “the old and new geopolitical challenges” that Morocco and the EU “have to face”, as well as on the various issues relating to the regional neighborhood and the international scene, in particular “the Maghreb, Libya, the Sahel, the Iran and the Russia-Ukraine War”.

The head of European diplomacy particularly wanted to thank Morocco for “the important role” it plays for the stability of Libya. Borrell also announced the launch of new initiatives aimed at further strengthening the Morocco-EU partnership, citing more particularly in this context the high-level dialogue on security to be held soon in Rabat.

Borrell is on a two-day official visit to Morocco to deepen discussions on the implementation of the EU-Morocco partnership, including in view of the new Mediterranean Agenda.

The historic partnership linking Morocco and the European Union has continued to develop in recent years, becoming a benchmark in the EU’s neighborhood policy.
