Benzema and Garcia elected French sportsmen of the year 2022

Sports journalists in France designated, this Wednesday, as part of the first edition of the Trophies of the Union of Sports Journalists in France (UJSF), the sportsmen of the year 2022. The choices were made on the Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema and tennis player Caroline Garcia.

Three thousand journalists who are members of the UJSF were thus invited to vote between November 24 and December 31 to elect the best athletes of the year.

Regarding Benzema, the UJSF stated on its website that“an injury will have deprived him of the World Cup and the blue epic, but his first half of 2022 was exceptional in every way. Karim Benzema (35) has reached his footballing peak and carried Real to a 14th Champions League and a new Spanish league title. His European spring will go down in history”.

Top scorer in the C1 and La Liga, Benzema was playing in another category in 2022. His own. That of a first French Ballon d’Or since 1998.

Paris Saint-Germain striker, young prodigy Kylian Mbappé finished 2nd on the list.

For her part, Garcia, 29, rose from the 75th rank in the world which she occupied before the American tour to end the year at 4th place in the WTA, winning the WTA 1000 tournament in Cincinnati and reaching the semi-finals of the US Open before winning the end-of-season Masters in Fort Worth (Texas).

Cyclist Pauline Ferrand-Prevost finished 2nd in the standings, while basketball player Victor Wembanyama was voted hope of the year.

The skier Arthur Bauchet won the disabled sportsman’s trophy. At 22, he is already a three-time Paralympic champion and eight-time medalist. In Beijing, after his four silver medals in 2018, the young skier won three titles in downhill, slalom and super-combined, with bronze in giant slalom.

The XV of France was acclaimed in the category “team of the year” and its coach Fabien Galthié as “coach of the year”.
