Walid Regragui, first Arab coach to lead his team to the 8th

National coach Walid Regragui has become the first Arab coach to lead his team to the knockout stages of the World Cup, said the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA).

Regragui, who took the reins of the Moroccan selection replacing Vahid Halilhodzic, managed to build a competitive team which he guided to the 2nd round of the World Cup in Qatar as leader of group F, in front of strong teams like Croatia and Belgium, writes FIFA on its website.

According to the same source, Regragui, 47, appointed head of the Atlas Lions a few months before the start of the World Cup, managed to achieve the objective expected by Morocco since 1986 and which several foreign coaches failed to achieve. .

The former Moroccan international, adds FIFA, managed to create a healthy and serene atmosphere in the Moroccan locker room, convinced some players to return to the selection, while advancing a new generation of players.

In addition to seven players who took part in the 2018 World Cup in Russia, including Yassine Bounou, Achraf Hakimi and Youssef En-Nesyri, the Qatari World Cup is seeing the participation of several new players such as Sofyan Amrabat, Noussair Mazraoui and Abdelhamid Sabiri, who have signed good performances , notes the same source.

FIFA also recalls that Regragui, who distinguished himself with Wydad Casablanca by winning the African Champions League, has other experiences as a coach with FUS Rabat and Al Qatari Duhail.

Under the leadership of Regragui, who engraved his name in the history of Moroccan and Arab football, the Moroccan selection achieved remarkable results against Croatia, Vice-world champion, Belgium and Canada, adds- we.

This successful experience should inspire other Arab selections to bet more, in the future, on “local” coaches, notes FIFA.

Morocco finished the group stage first in Group F with 7 points, ahead of Croatia (5 points), Belgium (4 points) and Canada (0 points).

The national team will face their Spanish counterpart next Tuesday at the Education City stadium in Doha in the round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
