UN/International Migrants Day: 280 million people seeking a better life

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that more than 280 million migrants around the world are looking for new opportunities and a better life.

In a message on the occasion of International Migrants Day, Guterres recalled that more than 80% of those who cross borders in a safe and orderly manner are powerful engines of “economic growth, dynamism and understanding”.

“But the uncontrolled migratory flows, with increasingly perilous routes, are the cruel playground of traffickers, and come at the cost of a heavy price,” he lamented.

For his part, the head of the International Labor Organization (ILO), Gilbert Houngbo, highlighted the protection of the rights of the 169 million migrant workers in the world.

“The international community must do better to ensure… [qu’ils] can realize their fundamental rights and their labor rights”, he said in his message on the occasion of this day.

By depriving them of the ability to exercise their fundamental rights, migrant workers are made “invisible, vulnerable and undervalued with regard to their contributions to society”, underlined the UN official.
