Towards the development of a multisectoral national strategic plan

The Minister of Health and Social Protection, Khalid Ait Taleb, said Monday in Rabat that his department is on the way to developing a multi-sectoral national strategic plan for mental health.

Ait Taleb explained, in his answer to an oral question on “psychiatry”, that this plan takes into account the approach of gender and human rights, noting that the Ministry is also working on the development of a draft assessment of the mental health system with the support of the World Health Organization.

In the same context, the Minister noted that the legal framework for mental health “is no longer adapted to developments in mental health and to the orientations of the National Mental Health Program and the World Health Organization”, noting that the current programs only fill the gap recorded in this area, ensure the adequate and continuous supply of drugs to emergency establishments, increase the number of psychiatrists trained annually, move towards the adequacy of the legal framework of the profession of psychologist and to reallocate the human resources specialized in psychiatry employed in the health establishments.

The Minister also announced the continuation of the establishment of integrated psychiatric services in public hospitals, the construction and equipment of 3 mental health hospitals in Agadir, Kenitra and Beni-Mellal, with 120 beds each, as well as the reconstruction of the Berrechid psychiatric hospital.

Ait Taleb however noted that the number of doctors specializing in psychiatry does not exceed 121, of which 11 doctors took up their services in 2021 and 15 in 2022.
