Between sadness, grief, pride and joy, the year 2022, to which we will say goodbye this Saturday, was marked by a series of events that caused the feelings of all Moroccans to swing.

It was an exceptional year in all respects, characterized by a set of facts arousing mixed emotions among Moroccans. From the tragedy of the Rayan child to the glorious epic of the Atlas Lions, here are some events that have marked the people the most.

Rayan Child Tragedy

It has now been aroundix months since the departure of little Rayan, the 5-year-old child remained stuck for 5 days in a well 32 meters deep on the outskirts of Chefchaouen, despite several attempts to save him and which all unfortunately ended in fail.

The tragic fate of Rayan, who died on February 5, went around the world and brought tears to millions. Indeed, this dramatic incident has attracted great attention from the media around the world, who have accompanied the rescue operation from its beginning through direct reports on the scene, where they praised the logistical means deployed by the Moroccan authorities to try to save the child.

Price inflation

With the advent of the war between Ukraine and Russia from the 2nd month, the year 2022 has taken a new step towards its qualification as an “unprecedented year”. This Russian-Ukrainian conflict has destabilized the balance of the world economy, which was barely returning to normal after two years of struggle following the repercussions of Covid-19.

The war has created a real obstacle for global economic growth in 2022, given that Russia and Ukraine have a relatively considerable weight in terms of production, generating an economic shock of significant magnitude, especially in the markets. of raw materials, where the prices of oil, gas and wheat soared, and Morocco was no exception.

Thus, this conflict has had a significant impact on the Moroccan economy which has not departed from the general rule in terms of repercussions on the purchasing power of citizens.

Remarkable support for the Moroccan autonomy plan

Undoubtedly, the year 2022 is a year of successes for Moroccan diplomacy which has been marked by a number of achievements, particularly with regard to the support of the autonomy proposal by influential countries, notably France, Morocco and Morocco. Germany and Spain.

In March 2022, France was the first to reiterate its support for the autonomy plan presented by Morocco as a “serious and credible basis for discussion” for the settlement of the dispute over the Moroccan Sahara. This was reaffirmed during the very last visit of Catherine Colonna, the French Minister for Foreign Affairs, who recalled that ” France’s position on the Sahara is clear and consistent. We support the ceasefire and the efforts of the United Nations and the Special Envoy for the Sahara in his tours, and we hope for the return of the political process for a just and realistic political solution”.

In April 2022, Spain, breaking the cold crisis between the two countries, publicly and officially supported the Moroccan autonomy initiative, presented in 2007. In a letter addressed to King Mohamed VII on March 14, 2022, the head of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, declared that “ Spain considers the Moroccan autonomy initiative as THE most serious, realistic and credible basis for resolving the dispute.

In May 2022, the Netherlands described the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco as ” serious and credible contribution to the UN-sponsored political process to find a solution to the Sahara issue.

The same goes for the Cypriot Foreign Minister, Ioannis Kasoulídis, who announced in Marrakech his country’s support for the autonomy proposal as a consensual solution to the settlement of this dispute.

Also added, the Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs who praised the efforts of the Kingdom of Morocco regarding the issue of the Moroccan Sahara, in particular the autonomy proposal submitted to the United Nations Security Council in 2007.

In August 2022, it was Germany’s turn to reiterate its position, stating that the autonomy plan for the Moroccan Sahara is ” a good basis for a mutually acceptable solution”.

This adds to a series of support expressed earlier by a number of countries, including Hungary, which has announced its support for autonomy, and Portugal, which has qualified this initiative as serious and credible in 2020, in addition to the numerous diplomatic representations, between embassies and consulates, which have opened their doors tat in Laâyoune than in Dakhla.

History of the Atlas Lions in Qatar

To end the year on a high note, the Moroccan national football team shone brightly at the Qatar 2022 World Cup, and achieved an unprecedented feat in the history of African and Arab football by reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup, having beaten and eliminated great nations from international football.

The National Eleven immortalized their name in the annals of history by taking the arduous path to the semi-finals of world football’s high mass, becoming the first Arab and African team to reach this phase since the very first edition. of the Cup in 1930.
