Messi criticizes the refereeing of the quarter between Argentina and the Netherlands

“You can’t put a referee like that for a match of this magnitude,” lambasted Lionel Messi after Argentina’s victory over the Netherlands (2-2, 4 t.a. b. to 3) in the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup.

“I believe that Fifa must take care of this”, urged Messi at the microphone of beIN Sports, at the end of a meeting marked by 14 warnings (6 yellow cards against the Dutch and 8 against the Argentines) and several beginnings of fight.

“The referee cannot fail to measure up,” the Argentine captain got carried away.

“We suffered what we had to suffer but we got there and that’s what is the most beautiful,” he commented on the victory in the snatch of his family.

Argentina “showed match after match that they knew how to play with the same intensity, the same desire to fight”, welcomed the striker, author of a new capital performance, with a decisive pass (35th) , a penalty (73rd) and a converted shot on goal.

In the semi-final on Tuesday (8:00 p.m.), Argentina will face Croatia, who fell the Brazilian favorite (1-1, 4 t.à.b à 2).

“It’s going to be a very tough match,” said Messi. Croatia have proven that they are very good (…) and we have seen that, if we let them play, they have very good players who know how to take the ball, especially in midfield”.

“It’s a team that has already worked for several Worlds with this coach (Zlatko Dalic, editor’s note), they know each other very well, they get along very well and it will be very hard. »

Spanish referee Antonio Mateu, 45, officiated during this match, having notably refereed the 2020-2021 UEFA Champions League final.
