Luis Enrique sacked after Spain's loss to Morocco

Luis Enrique has quit as Spain coach after Morocco were knocked out of the World Cup, the Spanish FA have confirmed.

The former Barcelona coach, whose contract with Spain was due to end at the end of the month, has taken full responsibility for his side’s earlier than expected exit from the tournament in Qatar.

Indeed, Spain were stunned by Morocco in the penalty shootout when hero-acclaimed Yassine Bounou stopped all shots from the Spanish players before Achraf Hakimi delivered the win with a legendary panenka.

“The RFEF would like to thank Luis Enrique and his entire team of coaches leading the absolute national team in recent years”the Spanish FA said in a statement.

“The sports management of the RFEF has transmitted a report to the president in which it is determined that a new project should start for the Spanish football team, with the aim of continuing the growth achieved in recent years thanks to the work carried out by Luis Enrique and their collaborators. The president, Luis Rubiales, and the sporting director, José Francisco Molina, conveyed the decision to the coach.adds the same source.
