Brazil decrees three days of mourning for Pelé

The Brazilian government declared Thursday three days of official mourning for the death of former footballer Edson Arantes de Nascimento “Pelé”, who died at the age of 82 in Sao Paulo.

The mourning comes into effect on Thursday and will expire on December 31, the eve of the inauguration of President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Workers’ Party, left).

The state of Sao Paulo and the town hall of the city of Santos, where Pelé spent much of his professional career, have decreed an official mourning of seven days.

The funeral of the triple world champion is scheduled for next Monday and Tuesday in Santos, a city on the coast of Sao Paulo state where he lived for decades and played for the city’s main club.

Pelé died Thursday at Sao Paulo hospital where he had been admitted for a month due to multi-organ failure caused by colon cancer diagnosed in 2021.
