Baitas reveals the measures taken by the executive

Drought, irrigation, production of the agricultural foods most consumed by Moroccans… the government spokesman, Mustapha Baitas, unveiled, this Friday, December 2, all the measures taken by the executive for the launch of the new agricultural campaign making currently facing great challenges.

Speaking at the press briefing postponed for this Friday, December 2, Mustapha Baitas, government spokesperson, said that “this new agricultural campaign comes in a difficult context, after two consecutive years of late rains and difficulties which led the Moroccan government to adopt a program, under the high royal directives, to which it allocated a budget of 10 billion dirhams, including a part intended for fodder, another for the water supply program for livestock in addition to the compensation granted for a year of drought“.

Baitas asserts that the government is well aware of these difficult circumstances and the significant rise in prices internationally, particularly of a group of inputs, and clarifies that the ministry and the executive have still managed to maintain prices. national inputs, “I’m talking about phosphates and selected seeds“, he says.

The spokesperson thus dissected, in his answer to a question from the press, the various measures put in place by the government. “First, there is the launch of the irrigation program for the agricultural season which takes place under normal conditions in the irrigation areas such as Lokos, the Gharb plain, etc.“, adding that a temporary share of water has been dedicated especially for the start of the current agricultural season, pending the improvement of the water stock of the national dams.

These measures consist in particular of theprecise and continuous monitoring of the evolution of the water situation and also the restriction of the areas of certain crops, in this case market gardening and fodder crops, because they are important for the supply of the national market and also the adoption of complementary irrigation depending on the regions and the availability of water“.

Regarding the strategies and efforts deployed by the government, Baitas specified that at the level of production factors, “a set of measures have been taken to secure sufficient savings to cover the needs of farmers and bring them closer to them. “. For seeds and autumn cereals, 1.1 million quintals of cereals selected from suitable and high quality varieties were supplied. The distribution network has also been adopted at the level of the regions of Morocco, which now has about 400 points.

In order to support farmers, the spokesperson pointed out that seed prices have been set at 210 dirhams for soft wheat and barley and 290 dirhams for durum wheat. “Still at the level of fertilizers, the national market will be supplied with about 650,000 tons, knowing that the current demand is about 500,000 tons, and prices are still subsidized and remain at the same level.“, he continues.

Regarding autumn crops, which are important, a total area of ​​about 4.5 million hectares has been programmed, including six hectares irrigated and of which about 35% is intended for soft wheat. However, direct implantation does not require a very large water potential, according to the official.

In terms of agricultural security, the surfaces insured for cereals and legumes have been extended by around 200,000 hectares in addition to securing 50,000 hectares of fruit trees, confirms the same interlocutor who mentioned that “the Agricultural Development Fund continues and will continue to provide assistance to farmers and support irrigation equipment over an area of ​​350,000 hectares until 2027. In addition to the establishment of new subsidies, especially for young people in the collection grounds“. Subsidies based on program contracts should also reach 3.7 billion dirhams for a total investment of approximately 7.4 billion dirhams.
