Global: 40 people close to the ultra-right arrested in Paris for carrying prohibited weapons

A group of 40 people close to the ultra-right, who were preparing to join the Champs-Elysées in Paris after the semi-final of the World Cup between France and Morocco, were arrested, in particular for wearing prohibited weapons, French media reported Thursday.

These people were arrested in the 17th arrondissement of Paris during a check for “grouping to commit violence” and carrying prohibited weapons, add the media, citing a police source.

According to this source, several of the members of this group were known to the police for belonging to a movement close to the ultra-right.

“They clearly wanted to do battle on the Champs”, note the media, adding that these arrests had been made possible thanks to the control and prevention system put in place around the Champs-Elysées.

For the occasion, 2,200 police and gendarmes were mobilized on Wednesday evening to supervise the celebrations on the Champs Elysées of France’s victory against Morocco in the semi-finals of the World Cup (2-0).
