2022, a year full of achievements for the Moroccan Society of Tourism Engineering

The Board of Directors of the Moroccan Society of Tourism Engineering (SMIT) met on Tuesday, December 27, 2022 under the chairmanship of the Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts and the Social and Solidarity Economy, Fatim- Zahra Ammor.

After a difficult period following the pandemic, SMIT’s efforts in 2022 have been directed towards reviving and boosting tourism investment. It should be remembered that during this decade the litter capacity was doubled and the volume of investment increased to nearly 8.5 billion dirhams in 2022. Thus, the constant efforts of SMIT have contributed to a rapid recovery marked by a rise in range with the opening of major hotel brands: Marriot in Rabat, Mariott Casablanca, Conrad Rabat Arzana, Hilton Garden Inn in Casablanca, Hilton Taghazout, Fairmont Palais Tazi in Tangier, Fairmont Salé and other establishments of international renown.

Fatim-Zahra Ammor says: “Tourism engineering, under the leadership of SMIT, has played a central role in reviving the sector, and the year 2022 has been rich in achievements: +15% in terms of investments compared to 2019, 737 hotel establishments having benefited from the government action of 1 billion dirhams for the upgrading of the hotel offer as well as the opening of several new hotel units which are part of the development of our reception capacity”.

Imad Barrakad, Managing Director of SMIT says: “The year 2022 was marked by the mobilization of significant resources for the revival of the tourism sector and the development of entrepreneurship, particularly in the tourist TPMS. SMIT is perfectly in line with this revival dynamic and has mobilized its skills and resources in the deployment of programs in favor of an attractive tourist product for investors and up to the expectations of tourists”.

In terms of boosting investment, SMIT has been a key player in reviving investment after the Covid health crisis. The tourism engineering studies carried out by the SMIT have greatly contributed to the promotion of tourism investment among its target. Thus, several events around investment have been organized to publicize the opportunities offered by the destination Morocco.

SMIT also continued to provide technical and financial support to local authorities to improve the attractiveness of their territories and create favorable conditions for investment. More than 1.5 billion dirhams have been committed to new programs, mainly focused on improving the outdoor tourism experience, highly prized by international and national tourists.

With regard to the recovery plan, the mission entrusted to SMIT to deploy support mechanisms was perfectly executed with tangible results within very short deadlines. More than 737 hotel accommodation establishments have benefited from the State subsidy mechanism. Finally, more than 10,000 financing contracts have been signed for the benefit of the beneficiaries of the “Forsa” program.

In its 2026 strategic plan, SMIT intends to restore, refocus and relaunch tourism investment, in line with the roadmap of the Ministry of Tourism.

As for the 2023 action plan, the SMIT will continue its policy of consolidation and diversification of the tourist product, technical and financial support for the Regions as well as the inclusion of VSMEs in tourist programs.
