The chances of Morocco to pass the 1st round and the other teams of group F are equal

Former Moroccan international Salaheddine Bassir estimated that the chances of Morocco and the other teams in group F (Croatia, Belgium and Canada) are equal to pass the group stage, given that the National Eleven has in its ranks several players who evolve in the biggest European championships.

Bassir said that the majority of these players have been trained in major European clubs and play prestigious competitions such as the Champions League and the Europa League, which allows them to rub shoulders with the greatest players and evolve at the highest level. .

The former Deportivo La Coruna player, however, noted that Morocco will be opposed to big teams, citing Belgium, which has long occupied the top of the FIFA rankings and which has several football stars in its squad such as Kevin De Bruyne , Romelu Lukaku, Eden Hazard, Yanick Carrasco, and Axel Witsel, as well as Croatia, vice-world champion in title and which has high level players (holders and substitutes) in the various positions.

On the contrary, he underlined, the Moroccan team does not have several choices in certain positions as is the case of the side or the central hinge composed of Romain Saïss and Nayef Aguerd which it is difficult to find. substitutes of the same level.

However, the former Moroccan international remains convinced that the chances are the same for all selections, as evidenced by the 2018 World Cup in Russia where Morocco, which inherited the “Group of Death” with Spain and Portugal and their constellation of stars, tied with those teams and came within a whisker of qualifying for the Round of 16 without VAR interference.

Moreover, he noted that the media and observers fail to mention Canada, the Atlas Lions’ third opponent in Group F, which he believes could create a surprise.

For Bassir, the Canadian team is a strong, young and homogeneous team which qualified for the World Cup in first place in the Concacaf Zone ahead of Mexico and the United States.

He added that Canada have fast and physically strong players, playing in the American championships and Europeans, who are able to outflank and carry out very dangerous lightning counter-attacks.

As for the national team, Bassir noted that attacking midfielders are among his strong points, with technical players like Sofiane Boufal, Amine Harit, Hakim Ziyech, and Azzedine Ounahi who can make the difference, especially against teams solid defensively.

He also stressed that the presence of Abderrazak Hamed Allah with the Atlas Lions at the World Cup can be very beneficial offensively, given his efficiency in front of goal and his ability to put pressure on defenders in the surface to repair.

As for the defenders of the national team, the former Moroccan international hopes that they will be in good shape at the World Cup, in particular Nayef Aguerd, who is returning from injury, as well as Achraf Dari.

Despite this, Bassir, who played with the Atlas Lions at the 1998 World Cup in France, said he was optimistic about Morocco’s chances at the 2022 World Cup, given that the national team has great players like Yassine Bounou, Achraf Hakimi, Noussair Mazraoui, Sofiane Boufal, or Azzedine Ounahi.

He also expressed the wish that the national team does not record injuries before the World Cup, especially during the friendly match that it will play next Thursday against Georgia.
