Pakistan: Former Prime Minister Imran Khan shot and injured during a rally

Unidentified assailants opened fire on Thursday during an election rally on former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan in the Pakistani province of Punjab.

According to local media, Imran Khan was shot in the leg during the attack, but “he is safe”.

The incident took place during an anti-government protest march led by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Mr Khan in Islamabad to demand a snap election.

Since last Friday, Khan, overthrown in April by a motion of no confidence, has led a “long march” on the capital Islamabad, demanding the holding of early elections.

A man suspected of opening fire has been killed, a close adviser to Khan told reporters.

“Another man was detained by the police,” added PTI leader Raoof Hasan, without specifying how the first assailant was killed.

According to media reports, PTI senator and close associate of Imran Khan, Faisal Javed, was also injured in the attack.

Entering the Pakistani political scene as a reformer, Mr. Khan founded his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, in 1996.
