Humanity has the choice to "cooperate or perish"

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has warned of the effects of climate change, saying humanity has only one choice to make: “Cooperate or perish”.

Climate change adaptation needs will reach more than $300 billion a year by 2030, warned UN SG, speaking at the opening of the presidential segment of COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh (Egypt).

“We are on the highway to climate hell, with our foot still on the accelerator,” warned Antonio Guterres, who stressed the need to adopt a roadmap to provide, by 2025, $40 billion in climate change adaptation aid pledged by rich countries to developing countries.

And to add: “We must make progress in the processes of adaptation to climate change” and that “half of climate financing at the international level should be allocated to plans for adaptation to climate change”.

About 3.5 billion people worldwide are at risk from these changes, he said.

The world will reach a new milestone in a few days, namely the birth of the 8 billionth child, which reinforces the importance of the discussions taking place within the framework of COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh and the measures that will be adopted to save the planet, continued the UN official.

“COP27 reminds us that time is running out and we are challenging ourselves,” he remarked, warning that “our world will lose if gas emissions and temperatures continue to rise” and that “our planet will then approach the point of no return due to climate chaos”.

The war in Ukraine and other conflicts have caused so much bloodshed and violence and had dramatic global impacts, and the UN, he argued, cannot accept that attention is not also focused on climate change.

The urgent crises in the world today cannot justify stepping back from confronting the impacts of climate change, but rather must be used as a motive to move forward with strong and effective action in the face of these repercussions, Guterres insisted.

In order to avoid what he described as “collective suicide”, the UN SG called on the G20 countries to accelerate the processes of radical reduction of gas emissions in the current decade, indicating that emerging economies must also play a role in meeting the emission rate target.

“The two largest economies – the United States and China – have a special responsibility to work together to make this pact a reality. This is our only hope of achieving our climate goals,” Guterres stressed in his speech, warning that “humanity has a choice: cooperate or perish.”

He also called for providing financial assistance to people suffering from the repercussions of high food prices, energy and losses resulting from climate crises, emphasizing the need to adopt a specific roadmap to make address these challenges, and endorse effective institutional arrangements for funding during COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh.

It is time for all countries to work together to implement climate commitments, added the UN chief, stressing that there remains a window of opportunity to address climate challenges for the benefit of the world’s population.

The UN SG also called on financial institutions and international multilateral banks to adjust their plans to effectively contribute to the financing of climate change adaptation plans, and to support private financing to invest massively in climate change measures. of combating climate change.
