Districts closed by the police in Brussels after the match against Morocco

Public order disturbances erupted in Brussels, the Belgian capital on Sunday late afternoon after the match between Morocco and Belgium, as part of the World Cup in Qatar. The Belgian police closed several areas of the city and made arrests.

“Around 3:22 p.m., dozens of people, some of whom were hooded, sought confrontation with the police, which compromised public safety,” said Ilse Van de Keere, spokesperson for the police zone. Brussels-Capital/Ixelles to the Belga press agency.

Sabotage of traffic lights, throwing of projectiles and fires were lit in the middle of the road in certain districts of the Brussels capital.

A hundred police officers, armed with water cannons and tear gas, intervened against unidentified supporters who destroyed street furniture and threw projectiles at the police.

“There was the use of pyrotechnic material, throwing of projectiles, use of sticks, fire on the public highway, in particular of a container at the intersection of Boulevard Lemonnier and rue de Woeringen”, indicated the Belgian police.
