The United Nations will launch “16 Days of Activism” on Friday as part of the global “All UNiS” campaign, on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women ( November 25), UN officials said Wednesday in New York.

This initiative, which will continue until December 10 (Human Rights Day), will be marked by a series of events organized around the world to accelerate efforts to end violence in the towards women and girls.

According to a report compiled by UN Women and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) presented at a meeting at United Nations Headquarters, every hour on average more than five women, or girls, have been killed by a member of their own entourage in 2021.

This report points out that these figures are “a stark reminder that violence against women and girls constitutes one of the most frequent violations of human rights in the world”.

In a message, UN Secretary-General António Guterres stressed that “this discrimination, violence and abuse targeting half of humanity has a high cost”.

A call is made to governments and partners to show their solidarity with movements and activists advocating for women’s rights.
