6.1 magnitude earthquake off Japan

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck off central Japan on Monday, rocking Tokyo and other cities, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

The quake’s epicenter was located offshore Mie County at a depth of about 350 kilometers, the JMA said. Japanese authorities have not issued a tsunami warning.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) also rated the magnitude of the quake at 6.1.

No damage or injuries have been reported so far and no anomalies have been detected at the Fukushima nuclear power plant (northeast), which was hit by a devastating tsunami in 2011, causing a serious nuclear disaster, according to the chain of NHK public television.

Shinkansen bullet trains and the Tokyo subway were briefly halted after the quake.
