381.4 million operations for 315.3 billion dirhams at the end of September 2022

The overall achievements of electronic payment activity reached 381.4 million operations for a total amount of 315.3 billion dirhams (MMDH) during the first nine months of 2022.

The activity, which includes cash withdrawal transactions on the network of automatic teller machines (ABMs), payment transactions with merchants and eMerchants, payment transactions on ATMs and Cash Advance transactions, by cards banks, Moroccan and foreign, in Morocco, is up 17% in number of operations and 14.6% in amount compared to the end of September 2021, specifies the Interbank Electronic Banking Center (CMI) in its recent report.

In Morocco, Moroccan cards recorded, in payments and withdrawals, 364.5 million transactions for 295.2 billion dirhams, up 15% in number and 11.6% in amount, the same source said.

These operations, continues the CMI, are divided into withdrawals (72.9% in share of the number of operations and 88.0% in share of the amount), in payment at merchants and eMerchants (26.8% in share of the number transactions and 12% by amount) and in ATM payment (0.3% by number of transactions and 0.1% by amount).

At retail, withdrawal transactions by Moroccan cards on ATMs in Morocco totaled, during the period of the first nine months of 2022, 265.7 million transactions for 259.7 billion dirhams, an improvement of 11.1% in number and 10.5% in amount.

Payment transactions by Moroccan cards with merchants and eMerchants affiliated with the CMI totaled 97.8 million transactions for 35.3 billion dirhams, up 27.8% in number and 21.3% climbing.

As for payments by Moroccan bank cards, they are distributed, in terms of volume, on mass distribution (23.7%), stations (11.5%), clothing (9.8%), restaurants (7.9%), the healthcare sector (5.4%), furniture & household appliances (4.7%) and other sectors (36.9%).

The said report also indicates that payment transactions on ATMs by Moroccan cards for the payment of bills, taxes and the purchase of Telecom recharges totaled 1 million transactions for 183.3 million dirhams (MDH), down by 24.1% in number and 19.4% in amount.

In addition, Moroccan cards with international validity carried out 12.5 million foreign currency transactions abroad or on foreign merchant sites, withdrawals and payments, for 6.4 billion dirhams, up 37.5% in number and 70.1% in amount.

The CMI also informs that in Morocco, foreign cards recorded, in payments and withdrawals, 16.9 million operations for 20.1 billion dirhams (+88.8% in number and +89.7% in amount). ). These transactions are broken down into withdrawals (35.6% by number share and 43.6% by amount share), payment (63.9% by number share and 55.6% by amount share) and Cash Advance (0.4% in number share and 0.8% in amount share).
