20.4 million operations for 7.1 billion dirhams at the end of September 2022

Merchant sites and biller sites affiliated with the CMI carried out 20.4 million online payment transactions via bank cards, Moroccan and foreign, for a total amount of 7.1 billion dirhams (MMDH) during the first nine months of 2022.

These operations show an increase of 37.1% in number and 24.6% in amount compared to the end of September 2021, indicates the Interbank Electronic Payment Center (CMI) in its recent report on electronic payment activity in Morocco.

The online payment activity of Moroccan cards increased in number by 36.2% to 19.5 million transactions and by 20.7% to 6.4 billion dirhams in amount, specifies the same source.

The Center also reports growth in online payment activity for foreign cards of 61.8% to 904,000 transactions for an amount of 606.1 million dirhams (+89.8%). The activity remains very strongly dominated by Moroccan cards up to 95.6% in number of transactions and 91.4% in amount.

At the same time, the said report notes that merchants and eMerchants affiliated with the CMI recorded, at the end of September 2022, 108.6 million payment transactions, by Moroccan and foreign bank cards, for 46.5 billion dirhams, up by 33.9 % in number and 39.7% in amount.

Payments by Moroccan and foreign bank cards are distributed, in terms of volume, on mass distribution (19.9%), hotels (12%), restaurants (9.5%), resorts (9.4% ), clothing (8.3%), healthcare (4.4%), furniture & household appliances (4.1%) and other sectors (32.2%).
