The United Arab Emirates reaffirm their "full support" for Morocco's sovereignty over its Sahara

The United Arab Emirates reiterated, in New York, their “full support” for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara and for the measures that the Kingdom is taking to defend its legitimate rights and just causes.

“My country supports the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco in 2007 and which the Security Council has described as serious and credible”underlined the representative of the United Arab Emirates before the members of the 4th Committee of the General Assembly of the United Nations.

This initiative represents a “important solution” in line with the Charter and the resolutions of the United Nations and which preserves the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco, she noted.

Welcoming the holding in Geneva of two round tables in 2018 and 2019, the Emirati diplomacy underlined the importance of the resumption of this process to reach a political solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

She also welcomed the first tour of the UN SG’s Personal Envoy for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura in the region, as well as his continuous efforts to relaunch the round table process.

At the same time, she highlighted Morocco’s sustained efforts to improve the living conditions of the populations of the southern provinces, as well as the human development index in this region within the framework of the new development launched by King Mohammed VI in 2015.

The diplomat also recalled that the United Arab Emirates have opened a consulate general in the Moroccan Sahara, like other countries, thus reflecting Morocco’s firm attachment to the sovereignty of its Sahara and its territorial integrity.
