Seoul could bid for the 2036 Summer Olympics

Seoul City Hall announced on Tuesday that it plans to bid to host the 2036 Summer Olympics.

According to local media, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon said the city is preparing to redevelop areas around the Jamsil Olympic Stadium, which he called a symbol of the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics. , adding that it would be a new start to prepare for a new edition of the Games in Seoul.

For his part, Lee Kee-heung, head of the Korean Sports and Olympic Committee (KSOC), said his organization plans to hold discussions with the country’s government on the possibility of submitting a bid to host the Olympics.

The official revealed that KSOC is considering Seoul or Busan as the host city, saying a public survey as well as more research and preparation are still needed before any decision is made.

Seoul has been hosting the 26th General Assembly of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) since Tuesday, which is scheduled to run until Oct. 21. The mayor of Seoul is expected to meet with International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach during the event.

South Korea has hosted the Games twice, with Seoul hosting the 1988 Summer Olympics.
