Burkina Faso reaffirmed, in New York, its support for the autonomy plan as a “credible and realistic solution” to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
Speaking before the 4th Committee of the UN General Assembly, the representative of Burkina Faso affirmed that his country’s delegation “welcomes and reaffirms its support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative”, which, he says, “constitutes a credible and realistic alternative in the resolution of this regional dispute, because it complies with international law, the United Nations Charter and the relevant resolutions of the Security Council and the General Assembly of the United Nations”.
The diplomat also reaffirmed his country’s support for the ongoing political process led under the aegis of the UN SG and his Personal Envoy for the Sahara and which aims to achieve a realistic, pragmatic, lasting and compromise to this regional dispute as recommended by the 18 Security Council resolutions since 2007.
The resolution of this conflict “will undoubtedly contribute to the stability and security of the Sahel region”, he said.
Burkina Faso has also welcomed the massive investments made in the southern provinces of the Kingdom in favor of the populations of the Moroccan Sahara.
