The State of Qatar underlined, in New York, that the “constructive” autonomy initiative presented by Morocco constitutes the basis of any realistic and lasting solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara.
Addressing the members of the 4th Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, the representative of Qatar expressed his country’s support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General to achieve a lasting and mutually acceptable political solution in the framework of the process carried out under the aegis of the United Nations and with due respect for Morocco’s national sovereignty.
He also welcomed the last visit to the region of the Personal Envoy of the UN SG for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, expressing the wish to see a definitive and lasting solution to this dispute materialize in the interest of all parties and in favor of strengthening stability and cooperation in the region, as well as international peace and security.
