Meta confirms global outage

A global outage affected WhatsApp on Tuesday, but its owner, the American group Meta (ex-Facebook), assured work to restore the messaging service “as quickly as possible”, while complaints from users multiplied on social networks .

For some users, however, the service seemed to be restored around 8:50 GMT, but difficulties persisted in sending and receiving messages.

The cause of the failure has not yet been specified.

“We are aware that some people are currently having difficulty messaging and we are working to restore WhatsApp for everyone as quickly as possible”told AFP a spokesperson for the American group.

According to reports on social media, users were unable to send messages or log into the service.

WhatsApp, which surpassed two billion users worldwide in February 2020, is one of the most popular free messengers in the world.

“User reports indicate that WhatsApp has been having problems since 9:17 am” (7:17 GMT), European time, said the DownDetector.com site, which tracks digital service outages, listing several thousand reports from Internet users around the world.

On Twitter, the #whatsappdown hashtag was one of the most popular trends around the world.

giant failure

Users of the social network at the blue bird were ironic about the breakdown of instant messaging by predicting that Twitter would take advantage of it and experience an influx of connections over the next few hours.

And on Instagram (Meta group), several million messages mentioned the breakdown under the hashtag #whatsapp.

Meta services, Facebook and Instagram social networks, as well as WhatsApp and Messenger messaging, have already been victims of an unprecedented giant outage last year.

The duration and scale of this disruption of four services used by billions of people had made it a major incident, so much so that Downdetector had then identified it as “the most important that has ever observed” the social media giant.

Facebook had at the time acknowledged that the incident was linked to an error on their part and not to a technical problem.
