Feverish and fearful, Algeria sends signals to the United States

For fear of being put on the list of countries supporting Russia (which it actually does), Algeria has begun to react to the American threat looming over it by sending appeals for clemency.

The historic ties between the Algerian regime and Russia, its untimely purchases of arms which amount to nearly 11 billion dollars each year, have made Algeria the number one target of potential American sanctions.

According to the German research institute Statista, Algeria’s military spending has reached around 7% of its gross domestic product (GDP) increasing crescendo since 2009 to approach 11 billion dollars per year.

“From 2010, the share has generally increased, peaking in 2020. Not only does the country top the ranking of African countries with the highest defense spending budget, but it is also among the top importers of weapons in the world“Said the same source.

And it is from Russia that Algeria buys its weapons, and with Russia that it claims its partnership against the positions of the United States, until two weeks ago. The letter from the 27 American senators, Democrats and Republicans, addressed to Antony Blinken, froze the blood of the generals at the head of the country.

On September 29, these senators, headed by Marco Rubio, vice-president of the Intelligence Committee in the Upper House of Parliament, called on Secretary of State Antony Blinken to implement the sanctions planned for countries financially supporting the Russia by buying arms.

Aware that if the United States were to blacklist it, it would be all Westerners who would follow, Algeria has started in recent days a crisis communication operation which has already begun with the summoning of the American ambassador, Elizabeth Moore Aubin, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Algeria played on two tables. The first, that of express reconciliation with France, which sent a delegation of 16 ministers to Algeria to parade and sign declarations of intent, proof that this trip was organized at the last minute.

Algiers took advantage of the convergence of two major interests for Paris (a long-awaited free reconciliation, in addition to gas) to request the arrival of a delegation of heavyweight ministers, and send the message that Algiers counts among its allies the great French power, an influential member of NATO, the European Union, the G20, G7, and the Security Council where it holds the Veto.

The second table on which Algeria is trying to play directly concerns the United States with a “hide misery” operation to try to appease American wrath.

On Saturday, an impromptu tribute to former US President John F. Kennedy (1960-1963) was organized with the inauguration of a commemorative plaque in the presence of US Ambassador Elizabeth Moore Aubin, ministers and advisers from the Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

The Minister of Mujahideen, Laïd Rebiga did not fail to call for clemency from the United States in his speech to talk about “the loyalty of Algeria, leaders and people, to those who supported the national revolution and human principles”.

The occasion to develop this deception was the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of a meeting, in Washington on October 15, 1962, between the first president of independent Algeria, Ahmed Ben Bella, and John Kennedy.

And on this occasion, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune would have decided to “award the late President Kennedy the medal of the friends of the revolution” and to organize a ceremony soon, enough to find material to create a new event of this same event.
