Who is Abderrahmane Al Maghrebi, potential next leader of Al Qaeda?

After the elimination of the leader of Al Qaeda, Ayman Al-Zawahiri by an American strike, a man, Abderrahmane Al Maghrebi, is one of the names mentioned to take over from him. Who is he?

You don’t have to go very far in the etymology of Abderrahmane Al Maghrebi to understand that he is a Moroccan. Real name Mohamed Abattay, Al Maghrebi could take the place of Ayman Al-Zawahiri, now dead.

The Moroccan is not anyone for the one who led the terrorist organization since the elimination of Osama Bin Laden, since he is his son-in-law and his main adviser.

Entrenched in Iran, Al Maghrebi is wanted by the American army and a bounty on his head is set at 7 million dollars. As for Al-Zawahiri it was 25 million dollars for any information that would have made it possible to find him.

The United States classified him in January 2021 as an “international terrorist”, and the conditions under which he was able to reach Iran from Afghanistan and Pakistan, where he was, still remain a mystery.

Indeed, he is neither one of the members of the organization’s leadership who joined Iraq in 2001, after the fall of the Taliban regime, nor of the leaders of Al-Qaeda who passed through this country in the part of a political transaction between the terrorist organization and Tehran.

The man joined Al Qaeda for many years, and was able to occupy the direction of the branch of the terrorist organization in Iran where he is. Prior to that, he served as Director General of Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan until 2012, was responsible for the organization’s media and propaganda arm, Assahab, and now continues to oversee the activities of Al Qaeda around the world.

If he is on track to lead the terrorist organization, other profiles can also take the place of the Egyptian Al Zawahiri. Leaders of branches of the terrorist group in different regions of the world can become the next leaders of Al Qaeda.

Among them are the Egyptian Saif Al-Adel, who is part of the “central command” of Al Qaeda, the leader of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), Yazid Mebrak, or the head of the branch of East Africa, Ahmed Diriye.
