Ronaldo promises 'truth' in response to media 'lies'

Cristiano Ronaldo promised on Instagram on Wednesday to reveal “the truth” in coming weeks, in response to media “lies” about his future at Manchester United, amid speculation over his potential departure.

In a response in Portuguese to a fan’s post, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner wrote that fans will know “the truth when I give an interview in a few weeks”, pointing out that “the media only tell lies”. “I have a notebook and out of 100 news stories about me recently, only five were true. Imagine how it is,” argued the 37-year-old. The Portuguese international, who still has a year of contract at ManU, had missed the resumption of training for the Red Devils in July, then the tour of Asia and Australia, due to “family problems”.

The British media then interpreted this absence as an expression of CR7’s desire to leave Manchester, sixth in the last Premier League and not qualified for the prestigious Champions League. The Mancunians suffered a disastrous start to the season, with a defeat against Brighton at home (2-1) at the start of the championship and a humiliation (4-0) against Brentford on the second day. Club supporters have staged a protest march outside Old Trafford against the Glazer family, owners of the club, pointing in particular to a disastrous recruitment strategy.
