Peru withdraws its recognition from the Polisario (official)

Peru decided on Thursday to withdraw its recognition of the separatist militia “SADR” and expressed its support for the Moroccan autonomy plan in the Sahara, indicates a press release from the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

This new major decision by the Republic of Peru comes one year after a position in favor of the Polisario despite the absence of any “effective bilateral relationship”. In September 2021, Peru resumed diplomatic relations with the Polisario after being freed from it for 25 years.

The new position and decision of Peru, which withdraws its recognition of the self-proclaimed republic (not recognized by the UN, editor’s note) of the polisario, and to “sever all relations with this entity” will be notified to the United Nations said the statement announcing the country’s return to its traditional position.

In its press release which dissociates itself from the Sahrawi separatist movement, the country indicated that it “values ​​and respects the integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco and its national sovereignty, as well as the autonomy plan for this regional dispute”.

The Department of Foreign Affairs of Peru seemed to understand, a year after its controversial decision, where international legality lies and expressed very strongly, in the most adequate terms, its support for Morocco and the defense of its territorial integrity. .

The Republic of Peru also recalled that it took this decision “in accordance with international law and UN resolutions on the question of the Sahara. »

The document points out that this decision was taken following a telephone conversation between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Peru, Miguel Angel Rodriguez Mackay, and Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Living Abroad.

The two governments have agreed to strengthen their bilateral relations through the immediate signing of a multi-sectoral roadmap that includes periodic political consultations, effective cooperation in the economic, trade, educational, energy, agricultural and fertilizer fields.

The Peruvian decision also comes in “support for the efforts made by the UN Secretary General and the Security Council to reach a political, realistic, lasting and consensual solution to the dispute over the Sahara”, wanted to notify the country.
