Kuwaiti Haitham Al-Ghais, new Secretary General of OPEC

The Kuwaiti Haitham Al-Ghais took office on Monday as the new secretary general of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), in succession to Mohammad Barkindo (Nigeria), who died in early July.

Al-Ghais was appointed head of Vienna-headquartered OPEC in January this year, and his term will last three years.

He said he looked forward to “working with all of our member nations and our many partners around the world to ensure a sustainable and inclusive energy future that leaves no one behind,” according to an OPEC statement.

Al-Ghais served as deputy general manager in charge of international marketing at the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC). He also served as the Governor of Kuwait for OPEC from 2017 to 2021.
