It is expected that, very soon, Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid will travel to Morocco for a summit of the Arab countries that have signed the “Abraham” agreements with Israel, on the occasion of the second anniversary of the signing of the normalization treaty according to the Hebrew newspaper, Israel Hayom.

For the first time as prime minister, Lapid will travel to Morocco before the elections and hold a conference there between the heads of state who have signed the peace agreements with Israel, following previous visits by the president. General Staff, Aviv Kohavi and Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai. Indeed, this visit comes a few days after the visit of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice Gideon Saar, Issawi Frej, Minister of Regional Cooperation, Aviv Kohavi, IDF Chief of Staff, and Yaakov Shabtai, Inspector general of the Israeli police.

The Foreign Ministry declined to comment on the content of the Israeli newspaper article, which stated that “ there was preparation at the highest level for a summit of the countries participating in the peace plan“. The Israeli newspaper pointed out that“The conference comes on the occasion of the second anniversary of the signing of the peace agreements between Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco under the auspices of the United States of America”. The same platform said that “the conference Israel is planning will be different from the Negev Forum, which was organized by Tel Aviv several months ago and held at the level of foreign ministers only“, noting that the next conference will be”at the highest level“.

Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Living Abroad, is due to go to Israel next September on an invitation. Meanwhile, it’s a race against time for Israeli officials to organize one of these two events ahead of Israel’s Knesset elections. Bourita had expressed, during his speech at the Negev Summit, Morocco’s willingness to host a similar event, saying “I hope to see us again in another desert, but with the same spirit“.

Hicham Mouatadid, a researcher, political scientist and international affairs adviser, told MoroccoLatestNews that “thehe Israeli Prime Minister’s visit to Morocco to prepare for the peace summit is part of the new international trend adopted by the leaders of the region regarding peaceful coexistence between peoples“. He felt that “the stage in Rabat is in the nature of a presidential visit, because the Israeli ministers have their political symbolism and their diplomatic weight. Morocco is betting on bringing together the points of view of all the components in order to find a definitive and comprehensive solution to download the new, renewed concept of regional peace in the region.“.

Mouatadid pointed out that “Lapid’s visit to Morocco has strategic implications, especially since the situation in the Arab world regarding the Palestinian issue raises many questions about the seriousness of Israeli involvement in building a responsible and constructive roadmap to guarantee the legitimate and historical rights of the Palestinians“.

Our interviewee further stated that “during this meeting Rabat will try to underline the historical and diplomatic role of Morocco vis-à-vis the Palestinian cause and to link it to the success of the next peace summit. Because the success of any new approach to peace in the region depends on the preservation of the historic and legitimate rights of all the peoples of the region, in particular the cause of the Palestinian people“.
