Attack on Salman Rushdie: Alleged attacker charged with attempted murder

The man suspected of attacking British writer Salman Rushdie, who is still on a ventilator in hospital, is charged with attempted second degree murder.

The prosecutor of Chautauqua (northwestern New York State), indicated, in a press release, that “the individual responsible for the attack on Friday, Hadi Matar, is officially charged with attempted murder and fact “.

The 24-year-old, from neighboring New Jersey, was born in the United States to Lebanese parents. He was arrested immediately after the attack.

Salman Rushdie, author of the controversial novel “The Satanic Verses”, was stabbed in the neck and abdomen on stage just before speaking at the cultural center in Chautauqua. He was transported to hospital by helicopter, where he is placed on a ventilator.

“The news is not good,” the 75-year-old British writer’s agent, Andrew Wylie, said in an email to the media on Friday evening. “Salman will probably lose an eye, the nerves in his arm were severed and he was stabbed in the liver,” he added.

The publication of The Satanic Verses earned Salman Rushdie a fatwa from Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini in 1989, calling for his assassination.
