UNIC Rabat mobilizes for the oceans

The United Nations Information Center (UNIC) in Rabat has partnered with Morocco’s National Railways Office to promote the UN Ocean Conference at 29 stations across the country.

The announcement was made yesterday Monday by the UNIC who explained that as part of the promotion of the Conference, travelers across the Kingdom’s trains watched screens displaying messages from the United Nations campaign titled ” Save the oceans, protect the future “.

UNIC Rabat hoped to reach the approximately 35 million passengers who pass through Morocco’s stations each year. Images, facts and videos raised awareness of the strategic importance of ocean and marine ecosystems for the planet and for socio-economic development“, explains the Center in a press release.

Thus, the campaign also drew attention to the existential threats these fragile ecosystems face as a result of human activity, such as global warming, ocean acidification, biodiversity loss and plastic pollution. source.

“The status quo is no longer an option. Unless we halt or reverse current trends, there is a real risk that we will have more plastic than fish in our oceans.“, explains the UNIC which argues that we must organize ourselves nationally and globally to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 14, “ Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development “.

For UNIC, the rational management of marine life is a particularly relevant issue in a country like Morocco, which has hundreds of kilometers of coastal areas along the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.

The Center also notes that these areas host extremely important development activities, such as fishing (2.3% of GDP, 10% of the country’s exports and 600,000 jobs), seaside tourism and port activity.

In conclusion, the UNIC indicated that the United Nations campaign entitled “ Save the oceans, protect the future coincided with the United Nations Ocean Conference, which took place in Lisbon from June 27 to July 1.
