The Spanish Parliament inflicts a new defeat on the separatists and their supporters

The Spanish Congress of Deputies, Lower House of Parliament, has reinforced the position of the government of Pedro Sanchez on the question of the Moroccan Sahara, thus confirming the broad support, within the Spanish constitutional institutions and the main political formations, for the Moroccan proposal for ‘autonomy.

The vote also comes to inflict a new discomfiture on the Polisario separatists and their supporters, in Spain or elsewhere, who still cling to theses dismissed, for a long time, by the international community.

By rejecting by a very large majority (252 out of 333 votes) “a motion for a resolution” asking the Spanish government to review its position on the Moroccan Sahara, the Spanish Parliament clearly and decisively supports the approach taken by the President of the government, Pedro Sanchez.

The latter had indeed underlined, last March, in a message addressed to King Mohammed VI, that his country “considers the Moroccan autonomy initiative as the most serious, realistic and credible basis for the resolution of the dispute” around from the Moroccan Sahara.

The vote consecrates an implacable and limpid report, suffering from no ambiguity: The two main political forces in Spain, both of the majority (Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party-PSOE) and of the opposition (People’s Party-PP) voted against the text of the resolution.

Only the deputies behind this resolution, and who are used to chasing after chimeras, obviously approved it. These are extreme formations without much impact on political life, made up in particular of the Catalan republican left and the Basque separatists of Bildu.

This new snub to the support of the separatists once again puts things in the right place and reinforces the position of the Sanchez government, which had recognized, in the message addressed to the Sovereign, “the importance of the Sahara issue for Morocco”, while emphasizing “the serious and credible efforts of Morocco within the framework of the United Nations to find a mutually acceptable solution” to the dispute.

In this logic, the position taken by the Spanish Congress of Deputies enshrines support for the full and entire sovereignty of the Kingdom over its southern provinces and for the serious efforts it is deploying for the settlement of the conflict around the Moroccan Sahara.

Doubling the hopes of the separatists and their rare supporters, but above all of their Algerian mentor, the new debacle definitively ratifies the bankruptcy of the theses supported by the separatists, which resonate with a thin minority in search of fallacious electoral interests.

The text comes to deal a new blow to the Polisario separatists, who are increasingly isolated and find themselves in a catatonic and desperate state in Spain.

Despite the base maneuvers and indecent acts of the Polisario and Algeria, the Spanish government continues to defend the relevance and the merits of its decision on the Moroccan Sahara, which is the result of a “reflection and evaluation of the whole situation”.

The unambiguous declarations and positions taken by Spanish officials in favor of the Moroccanness of the Moroccan Sahara only further confuse the separatists, who see their support in Spain shrinking every day, at a time when the initiative for autonomy under sovereignty Morocco has emerged as the one and only solution to this regional dispute.
