The Kaaba is adorned with a new kiswa

The Kaaba was adorned on Saturday with a new kiswa (cloth covering) on the first day of the Hegira New Year marking the 1st Muharram 1444.

The Saudi Press Agency, SPA, reports that the Kiswa covers the Kaaba, the cubic building, originally built by the Prophet Sidna Ibrahim and his son Ismail, at the center of Al-Masjid al-Haram (the Great Mosque ) from Mecca.

The kiswa of the holy Kaaba requires about 850 kg of raw silk, dyed black. It is made up of four separate sides and the door curtain.

The covering is decorated with Koranic verses embroidered on the fabric with 120 kilograms of 21-carat gold thread and 100 kilograms of silver thread.

This year, around 200 Saudi artisans participated in the production of the black curtain that covers the sacred structure.
