Spain change Algeria because of their lack of reliability

Spain is gradually getting rid of Algerian gas since the Maghreb country began to threaten its energy security. Since the announcement of the closure of the Maghreb Europe (GME) gas pipeline which passed through Morocco, Spain immediately changed its strategy to find gas elsewhere, particularly in the United States.

Faced with Algerian blackmail and Algerian political pressure to interfere in Spanish foreign policy, Madrid did not give in. The Iberian country has realized the lack of seriousness and reliability of Algeria which has not honored its commitments and which has threatened its trading partners on numerous occasions.

In the first half of 2022, the United States thus consolidated its position as Spain’s main gas supplier, with 34.4% of purchases (78,078 GWh) having been transported from the North American country.

According to data from the latest statistical bulletin of the Spanish gas operator “Enagas”, published on Monday, the cumulative figures for the first half of the year indicate that American gas imports have increased by a factor of 4.3, from 18,184 GWh in the first half of 2021 to 78,078 GWh between January and June 2022.

Likewise, the 10,618 GWh of gas imported from the United States in June 2022 represents an increase of 764.65% compared to the 1,228 GWh purchased during the same month last year, a more than eightfold increase.

Gas imports from Algeria fell by 41.11% in the first half of 2022 compared to the same period of the previous year, while purchases of this raw material from Russia increased by 3.2 % year-on-year in the first six months of the year.

Specifically, during the first half of the year, Spain bought 55,962 gigawatt hours (GWh) of gas from Algeria, of which 51,484 GWh (92%) arrived by gas pipeline (Medgaz) and the rest by LNG tankers in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

These figures represent a drop in Algerian gas arriving in Spain by pipeline of 40% compared to the first half of 2021, according to Enagas.

In addition to the United States and Russia, Nigeria is also one of Spain’s main gas suppliers, given that in the first half of the year 14% of imports of this raw material came from this country.
