Portugal activates the European Civil Protection Mechanism

Faced with the forest fires, Portugal has activated the European Union’s Civil Protection Mechanism, in order to request emergency aid. The country is facing forest fires in the center.

The European Commission notably mobilized two Canadair firefighting planes from its “rescEU” fleet, positioned in Spain.

“Through our rapid response to Portugal’s request for assistance, the EU demonstrates its full solidarity in the face of the destructive forest fires in central Portugal,” said Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič, assuring that the EU stood ready to provide further assistance.

In addition, the EU’s Copernicus emergency mapping service has been activated to help the country properly locate and fight forest fires affecting the districts of Leiria and Santarem, in the Ourém region. These maps help first responders assess the impact and damage of fires.

Portugal is facing several forest fires due to scorching heat which has destroyed several hectares in the center of the country, the thermometer has reached 44 degrees in several cities including the capital, and the Portuguese meteorological institute predicts that temperatures will continue to rise. increase until the middle of this week.

The government, which mobilized 2,800 firefighters, declared a “state of contingency” because of the situation.
