MONUSCO: Guterres' condolences after the death of a Moroccan peacekeeper

Guterres thus recalled the status-of-forces agreement concluded between the UN and the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which guarantees the inviolability of UN premises, stressing that any attack directed against United Nations peacekeepers United may constitute a war crime.

In this context, he called on the Congolese authorities to investigate these incidents and quickly bring those responsible to justice, reaffirming the firm commitment of the United Nations to sovereignty, independence, unity and integrity. territory of the DRC.

Through his Special Representative and his Mission mandated by the Security Council, will continue to support the Congolese government and people in their efforts to establish peace and stability in the east of the country, he said. added.

As a reminder, a press release from the General Staff of the FAR indicated on Tuesday that the deceased succumbed to his injuries caused by firearms fire during the rebel attacks against several deployment sites of the FAR contingent, taking advantage of an aggressive demonstration by the local population against the presence of MONUSCO, which took place on 25 and 26 July.

These attacks, it is noted, also caused 20 minor injuries among the soldiers of the FAR contingent at the Nyamilima site, who were immediately taken care of.

Two other peacekeepers of Indian nationality were killed in these attacks while another of Egyptian nationality was injured.

In the statement, the UN SG also offered his condolences to the Indian government, while wishing speedy recovery to the injured.
