Hepatitis C: The Ministry of Health launches the first national screening campaign

The Ministry of Health and Social Protection celebrates the World Day against Viral Hepatitis and launches the first national hepatitis C screening campaign, under the theme “For a Morocco without Hepatitis C”.

On this occasion, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection is launching the first national screening campaign for viral hepatitis C (HVC). This campaign will run from July 28 to December 28, 2022; it aims to carry out 150,000 rapid HCV screening tests at the level of health centers and to ensure the medical care of cases diagnosed at the level of regional and provincial hospitals.

In addition, the celebration of World HCV Day will be accompanied by the launch of the national strategic plan for the fight against viral hepatitis 2022-2026, with the aim of reducing new infections and HCV-related mortality by 50 % by 2026.

The implementation of HCV screening and care activities will also contribute to achieving the objectives of HCV elimination in our country, with a view to a Morocco without hepatitis. C by 2030, which will save more than 4,000 human lives and prevent 2,300 HCV-related cancers.

Indeed, according to data from the national survey of seroprevalence of Viral Hepatitis in Morocco, the prevalence of HCV is 0.5% in the general population and 125,000 people suffer from chronic HCV. This prevalence is even higher among high-risk groups, particularly key populations and hemodialysis patients.
