The Ministry of Agriculture is developing eight new varieties of prickly pears resistant to cochineal

The Ministry of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests has developed eight new varieties of prickly pears resistant to cochineal, indicated, Thursday in Rabat, the Minister Delegate in charge of Relations with Parliament , government spokesman, Mustapha Baitas.

“The Ministry of Agriculture is working on new varieties of prickly pears resistant to cochineal and has developed eight new varieties planted in Sidi Bennour, Marrakech and Sidi Ifni and which have given very important results”said Mustapha Baitas in response to a question about the threats of the cochineal on the local prickly pear, during a press briefing after the weekly meeting of the Government Council.

“This project is progressing well, but it requires an increase in investment”, he noted, assuring that the next few years will see the return of local production of prickly pears to its usual level.
